Sri Lanka's Northern Province Governor becomes former cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan

Sports Desk – Former Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is going to start his first innings in politics. He has been appointed as the Governor of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. This province is a Tamil majority. According to media reports on Wednesday, Sri Lankan President Gautabaya Rajapaksa made the proposal by personally inviting Muralitharan.

Apart from Muralitharan, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has made Anuradha Yahampath the Governor of the Eastern Province and Tisas Bishanpa the Governor of the North Central Province. Anuradha is the President of the National Board of Trade and the Director of the Garment Export Company. While Prashanta is a former minister and leader of the Lanka Sama Samaj Party (LSSP), following the principles of Leon Trotsky.

Muralitharan, a former 47-year-old cricketer, holds the record for taking the most 800 wickets in 133 Tests. He retired from Test cricket in 2010. Muralitharan has taken 534 in 350 ODIs and 13 wickets in 12 T20s. Muralitharan married Madimalar Ramamurthy of Chennai in March 2015.
