IPL 2025 Replacement Players and Updates

IPL 2025

The IPL 2025 season has seen significant changes in player availability and replacement rules due to a week-long suspension of the tournament and overlapping international commitments. Here are the latest updates:

Rule Changes for Replacements

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has allowed franchises to sign temporary replacement players for the remainder of IPL 2025, a departure from the usual rule that limited replacements to injuries or illnesses occurring before a team’s 12th game.
  • These temporary replacements can be signed due to national commitments, personal reasons, or injuries/illnesses.
  • Importantly, any player signed as a temporary replacement after the resumption will not be eligible for retention ahead of the next season. They must re-enter the auction pool for IPL 2026 if they wish to participate again.
  • Replacements signed before the suspension remain eligible for retention.

Key Player Withdrawals and Replacements

  • Delhi Capitals: Jake Fraser-McGurk has withdrawn for personal reasons and has been replaced by Mustafizur Rahman.
  • Chennai Super Kings: Jamie Overton has opted out due to national duty.
  • Punjab Kings: Kyle Jamieson replaces Lockie Ferguson, who is out with a hamstring injury.
  • Gujarat Titans: Kusal Mendis will replace Jos Buttler, who is leaving for national duties after May 25.
  • Lucknow Super Giants: William O’Rourke replaces Mayank Yadav, who is sidelined with a back injury.
  • Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Josh Hazlewood and Rajat Patidar are set to rejoin the squad, providing a boost as the league resumes.

Other Notable Updates

  • Many foreign players, especially from Australia, South Africa, and England, are unavailable or uncertain for the playoffs due to international fixtures, prompting teams to seek replacements.
  • The IPL resumes on May 17, 2025, and will conclude on June 3, 2025, with teams now able to sign replacements until the end of the tournament.
