Cristiano Ronaldo is among the greatest football players in history. He has achieved all his goals in football.
In terms of his achievements with teams, the Portuguese player earned himself two La Liga trophies, three English Premier League trophies, and four Champions League titles, among others, when he was playing for Real Madrid and Manchester United teams. As an international footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo has played a significant role in helping these clubs win trophies. The player has won the Ballon d’Or trophy five times.
The player, who made his debut in the Portuguese national team in 2003, is currently the captain and leading footballer of his team. Even after winning the European championship in 2016, he and Portugal team have failed to reach the World Cup four times.
2006 World Cup Exit
He debuted when the World Cup took place in Germany at the age of 21 in 2006. He was one of the key players in the team captained by Luiz Felipe Scolari, including stars like Luis Figo, Simao, Deco, and Pauleta.Ronaldo delivered a rather poor performance as he appeared on the field for the first time during the group stage match against Angola. In the second match against Iran, he scored his first goal in the tournament, stepping up to the spot ahead of Luis Figo in a 2-0 win in Frankfurt.
During the final match against Mexico, which ended in Portugal’s victory of 2-1, Portugal decided not to start Ronaldo but put him into action in the round of 16 game against the Netherlands. Unluckily for him, he could not stay long in the game called later “Battle of Nuremberg” as he was hurt by Khalid Boulahrouz at 34 minutes into the game. Without his participation, Portugal managed to beat the Oranje by 1-0 to proceed to the quarter-finals against England.
Portugal’s World Cup hopes came to an end when Zinedine Zidane’s penalty kick in the 33rd minute gave Les Bleus the victory. Portugal had been paired with France in the semi-final after defeating England. They were subsequently pitted against the third-place play-off against tournament hosts Germany as losing semifinalists, but Jürgen Klinsmann’s team defeated them 3-1.
2010 World Cup Exit
Ronaldo would join the likes of Brazil, Mexico, and Ghana when he travelled to South Africa four years after making his World Cup breakthrough in Germany at the age of 25 as the world’s most expensive player, having been transferred to Real Madrid for €94 million.
As the leader of Portugal, Ronaldo now had more responsibilities to play since the likes of Pauleta, Deco, and Figo had left the scene. Portugal progressed into the World Cup finals as winners of a group that featured North Korea, Brazil, and the Ivory Coast. However, they only beat North Korea by a score of 7-0, in which Ronaldo scored once, incredibly, for the first time in 16 months for his team.
This became worse as Portugal found themselves drawn against Spain, their Iberian neighbours who would end up lifting the trophy as the defending European champions in the process. This was an even tougher task, as Vicente del Bosque’s La Roja were also among the favorites in the tournament.
Portugal would line up against Spain with Ronaldo starting out on the left wing of the field. Ultimately, Ronaldo’s experience at his first tournament in 2006 was very different from the 2010 World Cup. It was arguably the lowest point of his international career, with just one goal in four games—a goal in the 87th minute of a 7-0 victory over North Korea—and a torrent of criticism.
2014 World Cup Exit
Ronaldo arrived in Brazil at 29 years old as the reigning Ballon d’Or and winner of the Champions League with Real Madrid. Although at the peak of his career, he was still dealing with disappointment from the international competitions. He scored four goals in the two legs of the Portugal versus Sweden play-off match of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, where he scored a hat-trick in the second leg of the game in Solna.
Portugal lost their first match against Germany after Pepe was shown a red card in the first half, resulting in a 4-0 loss to Joachim Low’s side in Portugal’s worst-ever World Cup loss.
In order to qualify for the knock-out rounds, Portugal had to beat Ghana in the last match and hope that the match between Germany and the USA would go their way. With ten minutes left on the clock, Ronaldo scored a goal, bringing the tally to 2-1 and securing a header save for his country. Portugal left Brazil after only three matches since the goal, which made Ronaldo the first Portuguese to score in three World Cups, was not enough to propel them forward.

Portugal entered the 2018 World Cup in Russia as the reigning European champion but was put into an intriguing group alongside Morocco, Iran, and Spain, who are their rivals from the Iberian Peninsula.
