NZ20 refers to a new privately owned T20 cricket league in New Zealand scheduled to launch in January 2027. It will replace the current Super Smash T20 league and feature six franchises operating independently under a license from New Zealand Cricket (NZC).
Innovation, Private Ownership, and Top Kiwi Talent
The league is designed to be fan-focused, held during New Zealand’s peak summer with a short window, and aims to attract top Kiwi players who currently play in other global leagues. It is spearheaded by a committee including former players and officials, with a vision for innovation, private ownership, and player investment stakes.
The launch faces some challenges, including potential scheduling clashes with leagues like BBL, SA20, and ILT20, and requires swift approval from NZC to commence as planned.
Top players in NZ20
The NZ20 league aims to attract top New Zealand players like Lockie Ferguson, Finn Allen, and Kane Williamson, many of whom do not currently participate in the Super Smash. The biggest challenge for the league is finding a clear scheduling window in January, as it clashes with other major T20 leagues like the BBL, SA20, and ILT20, which also involve New Zealand internationals. The men’s tournament is planned for January 2027, followed by a women’s league expected in December 2027.

However, there is strong enthusiasm among New Zealand players to participate in this new competition. The league is envisioned as a short, fan-focused event hosted at scenic venues during New Zealand’s peak summer.
