Dunith Wellalage Career

Wellalage was captain of the Sri Lankan team in the 2022 Under-19 World Cup. He is a spin all-rounder and currently, he is only 20 years of age. He had an impressive tournament in 2022 where he contributed with both bat and ball. He picked 17 wickets and ended up as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament. He took 17 wickets in 6 games with an impressive average of 13.58.

He also contributed valuable runs with the bat he made 264 runs with the bat at an average of 44 and ended as the highest run-getter for Sri Lanka. He made his debut for the national team in 2022 in an ODI match against Australia at Pallekele, Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka lost that match with two wickets but Wellalage took 2 wickets in his debut match.

Wellalage also made his test debut against Pakistan in July 2022 at Galle. His big breakthrough came in Asia Cup 2023 where he made an important partnership with Theekshana and won the game against Afghanistan. He is the new rising star of Sri Lankan cricket.

Wellalage made his biggest jump in a match against India in the Asia Cup 2023. In a Super 4 match against India, he picked his first 5 wicket haul and gave only 40 runs in his spell. He was outstanding against India. He took the wickets of some very big names in World cricket. He took wickets from a strong Indian top order, Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya. He also played a fighting knock of 42 runs that kept the hopes alive but unfortunately ended up in a losing cause.
