Christian Eriksen, a 34-year-old midfielder who plays for VfL Wolfsburg and the Denmark national team, collapsed during a friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday. The incident was serious and the game was stopped. He is now awake and getting better in hospital while doctors run more tests.
Official Statements from Danish Football Federation
Danish team doctor Morten Boesen shared important information about him:
“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.”
“He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. Christian is doing well, and he asked to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”
The Danish FA confirmed on X (Twitter): Christian Eriksen is awake and doing as well as can be expected.
Link to Cardiac Arrest
This happened five years after Eriksen nearly died from a heart attack at Euro 2020. After the 2021 incident, doctors put a small device called an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) into Eriksen’s chest. The ICD watches his heartbeat and can give a quick electric shock if it finds a dangerous rhythm. Doctors think the collapse might have happened because the ICD gave a shock.
