Marco Asensio (Full Name – Marco Asensio Willemsen) is a Spanish forward born on 21 January 1996 in Palma, Spain. His father’s name is Gilberto Asensio and mother’s name is Maria Gertruida Margaretha Willemsen. He has a brother – Igor Asensio. Let us tell you that he was named after Marco van Basten, her mother’s most favorite Dutch soccer star.

Childhood

Marco Asensio loved to play football when he was a little kid. However, his dad didn’t like his passion for the game that much but as a parent, he did everything possible for his son. Marco was sometimes asked by his dad to focus more on his studies.

Did you know? Asensio’s first ever club was Real Madrid and hasn’t left the club since then. When his mother saw president Florentino Perez, he introduced Asensio as follows: “Mr. President, this is our boy, Marco, and one day he will play for Real Madrid.” This story is told by Florentino himself. His mother believed that Marco was going to become a Real Madrid footballer in the future.

The 24-year-old suffered from a neurological disorder (problem with the joints in his legs) and so he wasn’t able to go on the field to play. Doctors made it clear that there was no solution for the disorder and that as he evolved, the issue would fix itself.

Career

At the age of 17, Marco Asensio made his senior debut in Tercera División for Mallorca in the 2013-14 season. On 27 October 2013, he made his debut in Segunda División with the first team in a 1-3 defeat away to Recreativo de Huelva.

On 16 March 2014, Asensio scored his first career goal in a 2–0 home victory over CD Tenerife. He later went on to score against CA Osasuna, Deportivo Alavés, and UE Llagostera within a month.

Marco signed a six-year deal with Real Madrid for a fee of EUR 3.9 million on 24 November 2014. He however stayed on loan with the Bermellones until the end of the season.

Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal played a key role in the move of Marco Asensio to Real Madrid, as Florentino Perez said.

Since Asensio is Spanish player with Dutch descent, he received an invitation from the Royal Dutch Football Association but he preferred to represent Spain. He made his debut for the under-21 side on 26 March 2015. He scored his first international goal in a 2-0 friendly victory against Norway.

The Spanish star scored his first career hattrick when he was picked by manager Albert Celades in the squad for the 2017 European Under-21 Championship. He helped his team to reach the finals but lost 1-0 to Germany.

In 2018, he was named in Julen Lopetegui’s roster for the FIFA World Cup back with the seniors. In a 1-0 victory over Iran, he made his competition debut on 20 June by replacing Real Madrid teammate Lucas Vázquez.

On 11 September 2018, Asensio scored his first goal for Spain in a 6-0 victory over Croatia in the UEFA Nations League.

Marco Asensio used to date a Spanish model, Marina Muntaner. He revealed his relationship with her when he posted pictures including them together. They later had a breakup and he has been in a relationship with Sandra Garal since 2018.
