Gareth Bale started his professional football career at Southampton in 2006, thus becoming the second youngest player in the history of the club. He scored his first club goal against ‘Derby County’ in a 2-2 draw.

The same year, he won the ‘BBC Wales Young Sports Personality of the Year.’ Later in that year, he was signed by Tottenham Hotspur, scoring three goals in his first four appearances for the club.

Bale stayed with the ‘Spurs’ for the next three seasons, but could not win any major title during that period.

He however won many awards, including PFA Players’ ‘Player of the Year’, ‘Young Player of the Year’ and the ‘FWA Footballer of the Year,’ thus becoming only the second player in the history to win all three major awards in one season (2012-13).

He played 203 games for the ‘Spurs’ and scored 55 goals.

In 2013, Bale signed a six-year contract deal with Real Madrid for a then world-record fee of £85m. Of course he was one of the members of that elite Real Madrid squad that won three UEFA Champions League titles in a row.

He left Europe in 2022 and joined American side Los Angeles FC where he won the MLS cup in his first and only season with the club.

In January 2023, he announced his retirement from both club and international football at the age of 33.

“My decision to retire from international football has been by far the hardest of my career,” Bale said. “My journey on the international stage is one that has changed not only my life but who I am.”

“I feel incredibly fortunate to have achieved my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life. The highest of highs over 17 seasons that will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the next chapter has in store for me.”
