Rúben Neves is a Portuguese professional footballer born on March 13, 1997, who plays as a defensive midfielder. He currently plays for Al Hilal in the Saudi Professional League and is also a member of the Portugal national football team. Ruben Neves has a new tattoo in memory of his close friend and teammate Diogo Jota.
What Happened to Diogo Jota?
Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota died in a car accident on July 3, 2025, in northwestern Spain. He was driving a Lamborghini with his brother André Silva when a suspected tyre blowout caused the vehicle to veer off the A-52 motorway near Zamora, leading to the car catching fire. Both brothers were killed at the scene. Spanish police said the evidence shows Jota was the one driving, and the car was probably going much faster than the 120 km/h (75 mph) speed limit when the accident happened.
Neves reveals Jota tattoo as Portugal honour Liverpool star
Rúben Neves has unveiled a new tattoo in tribute to his late best friend and teammate Diogo Jota. The tattoo, located on his left leg, depicts an image of Neves embracing Jota, who is shown wearing his Portugal national team No. 21 jersey. The tattoo also includes the phrase, “You will never be forgotten. We are 23+1,” symbolizing their bond and the team’s unity following Jota’s tragic passing in a car accident in July 2025.
Neves has also taken on Jota’s No. 21 jersey for the Portuguese national team as a way to keep his memory alive on the field. The gesture was part of a heartfelt ceremony held by the Portugal Football Federation, attended by teammates including Cristiano Ronaldo, Jota’s family, and national dignitaries. Neves expressed that the tattoo and wearing Jota’s number are personal ways to see him on the pitch and honor his legacy as they prepare for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
