Top 10 most valuable free agents in the world, as of 2024

Less than three months left in the 2023–24 season, and clubs throughout Europe are hard at work organising their summer transfer window plans.

This summer is predicted to bring some major transactions, chief among them the probable departure of Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain upon the expiration of his contract, with Real Madrid.

However, there are some well-known free players available for clubs that need to be a little more imaginative and economical with their expenditures.

David de Gea, the former custodian for Manchester United, is the most prized of them. After United withdrew a contract offer, the Spaniard left the team at the end of the previous campaign, and he hasn’t been with a team since.

De Gea allegedly turned down a contract offer from Nottingham Forest in January, and he has been connected to a move to Saudi Arabia. With a value of £6.8 million, Transfermrkt lists him as the most valuable free agent.

Following his controversial departure from Bundesliga team Mainz 05, Anwar El Ghazi is also free agency. After making several social media statements regarding the Israel-Gaza war, the former star of Aston Villa had his contract terminated in November.

It is possible that he will be signed for approximately £2.5 million. Helder Costa, a former winger for Leeds and Wolves, is one of the most prized players without a club right now.

After failing to play for Leeds for two years, the Angola star left the club in October with mutual consent. The 30-year-old is worth £2.4 million, but no one has shown interest in acquiring him.

Carlos Vela, the former Arsenal player, is another well-known name on the list. The Mexican attacker performed admirably in La Liga with Real Sociedad and MLS with LAFC, but he never quite cut it in North London.

Vela, now 35, departed Los Angeles at the conclusion of 2023 after his contract expired.
