Karim Benzema tests positive for Covid-19, delays start with Real Madrid

Karim Benzema has been tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of preseason training. The club did not elaborate on striker’s condition in a short statement.

Benzema had been expected to return to Madrid on Friday to start training. However, due to the positive test result, he will stay in Lyon.

The 33-year-old French international will have to remain in quarantine for 10 days. He hasn’t played since France was eliminated from the European Championship on June 28.

This is bad for Real Madrid given Benzema’s importance within the team. Los Blancos don’t have an obvious replacement for him.

Luka Jovic has been training apart from the group for the last few days. This means that coach Carlo Ancelotti could need to trust Mariano early on.

It’s important to wish that he deals with Covid-19 without problems. Some of his teammates like Rodrygo and Vinicius have already been vaccinated.
