Robert Lewandowski broke Gerd Muller’s record of scoring most goal in a season

On Saturday, Bayern Munich defeated Augsburg 5-2 in the final Bundesliga fixture of this season.

Robert Lewandowski netted his 41st Bundesliga goal this season and broke Gerd Muller’s record for scoring most goals (40) in a Bundesliga season.

A few days ago, Lewandowski equalized Gerd’s record of 40 season goals and gave a beautiful tribute to him.

Bayern’s head coach Hansi Flick said: “Generally speaking I did believe it. But, when the 87 and 88th minute started that’s where I didn’t really believe it. But it distinguishes him, he was there where he needed to be and he scored his goal. He now holds the record for himself. So an absolute compliment to him. It was absolutely world class what he has done here in the last two years.

Lewandowski is already second on the all-time scorers list in the Bundesliga, with 277 goals now, behind only Muller’s 365.

Despite missing more than half a dozen clear scoring chances in the game, Lewandowski managed to find a free ball and scored the goal finally.

Javi Martinez, David Alaba and Jerome Boateng were given a farewell for their last match as a Bayern player. About 250 fans were invited in the 75,000-seat arena, it was an emotional afternoon for Bayern with the championship long wrapped up.
